Frequently asked questions

How do I become a racehorse owner?

Becoming an owner is more accessible than you might think. You can acquire a horse outright or buy shares (from 1% to 100%). TS Bloodstock guides you through selecting the right horse, choosing a trainer and handling all the administrative formalities.

What budget should I plan for?

Budgets vary widely depending on the discipline, age and breeding of the horse. A yearling can cost from a few thousand to several hundred thousand euros. On top of that, monthly training fees run to approximately EUR 2,000 to 3,500 per month in France.

What are the potential returns?

Returns depend on the level of competition. France offers some of the most generous prize money in the world. A horse running regularly at provincial level can earn a few thousand euros per race, while a Group horse can generate tens or even hundreds of thousands of euros.

What is the difference between flat racing and trotting?

Flat racing encompasses turf and all-weather races as well as jump racing (hurdles, steeplechase). Trotting is divided into harness racing (sulky) and mounted trot. The two disciplines offer different experiences in terms of budget, race frequency and prize money.

The French horse racing market — prize money and opportunities

Context

The French racing market

France is one of the largest racing markets in the world, with over 4,000 flat and jump races and 11,000 trotting races held every year.

The market distributes nearly EUR 293 million in annual prize money, placing France among the most rewarding countries for owners.

The Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the Prix d'Amérique and the Prix du Jockey Club are landmark races that attract the world's best horses and carry substantial prize money.

Whether you are drawn to flat racing, jump racing or trotting, the French market offers real opportunities for owners at every level. The racecourses of Longchamp, Chantilly and Deauville host world-class events throughout the year.
