Breeding
From the stud farm to the racetrack, build your breeding project
How to develop a racehorse breeding operation?
Breeding is the foundation of horse racing. Whether you wish to acquire a broodmare, optimise your matings or invest in a stallion, TS Bloodstock supports you with expertise and passion to build a coherent and productive breeding operation.
Broodmare acquisition
Identification and purchase of broodmares with strong genetic potential. We analyse pedigrees, the performance of their offspring and portfolio value to select the best opportunities at public auction or by private treaty.
Mating advice
The choice of stallion is a crucial decision. We study nicking patterns, production records, and physical and genetic complementarities to recommend the most promising matings.
Stallion shares & syndication
Investing in a stallion can be a lucrative long-term venture. We provide access to syndication shares and advise on stallions with strong potential, in both flat racing and trotting.
Breeding in numbers
From covering to the racetrack
Covering
Stallion selection and covering of the mare. The breeding season runs from February to July.
Birth of the foal
After 11 months of gestation, the foal is born at the stud farm between January and June the following year.
Weaning
The foal is weaned from its dam at around 6 months of age. It remains at pasture with other foals.
Pre-training
The yearling begins its physical preparation: breaking in, first sessions at trot and canter.
Sale or placement in training
The yearling is either presented at public auction (Arqana, Tattersalls) or placed directly with a trainer.
Racing career
The horse begins its racing career on the track. The first results validate (or not) the breeding decisions.
Who is this for?
Owners with a retiring racehorse
Your mare has finished racing and you are wondering what comes next. If her pedigree allows it, converting her into a broodmare can be an excellent project. A mare that ran at Listed or Group level carries genuine breeding value. We assess her pedigree, race record and conformation to determine whether the switch to breeding makes sense, and which stallion would suit her for a first mating.
Long-term investors
Breeding is a patient investment. Between covering and the first race, count on roughly 3 years. But the returns can be significant: a well-bred yearling regularly sells for EUR 30,000 to 150,000 at auction. And if the offspring performs on the track, the value of the mare and her future foals rises sharply. We structure breeding projects over 5 to 10 years for investors seeking an alternative asset with a sporting dimension.
Active breeders
You already have mares at a stud farm and are looking for an external opinion on your mating plans. The stallion choice each year is the single most consequential decision in breeding: a nomination fee runs from EUR 3,000 to 200,000 depending on the stallion. We analyse nicking patterns, production statistics and market trends to optimise every mating. A second technical opinion can make all the difference to the quality of your foals.
Our breeding credentials
Thibault worked at Haras de Beaumont as a stallion nomination salesman, one of the most respected private studs in France. He gained first-hand knowledge of the stallion market there: how a nomination is negotiated, which stallions produce on which type of mare, and at what price. This kind of direct commercial experience is something few agents of his generation can claim.
Beyond Beaumont, he spent time at Haras de Saint-Voix and maintains regular relationships with the leading studs in Normandy, the Berry region and Ireland. When he recommends a stallion, it is not based on a catalogue: it is because he has seen the progeny, spoken with breeders who have used the horse and studied the early production statistics.
The French breeding market has its own particularities. Breeder premiums distributed by France Galop and Le Cheval Francais reward those who breed and race in France. A French-bred horse racing on French soil qualifies for a bonus that can represent 30 to 60% on top of standard prize money. We factor these incentives into every mating recommendation to maximise the return on your breeding project.
